IS PUBLIC VALUE THE SOLE DOMAIN OF THE PUBLIC SECTOR

20 OCTOBER 2009

Hosted by Channel 4
at
124 Horseferry Road, London SW1P 2TX

The creation of public value is a key part of the remit of public institutions in the communications, media and arts sectors.  As an equivalent to shareholder value, the delivery of public value can be seen as the purpose and obligation of publicly owned institutions to their owners – the public.

Public value is commonly understood to look beyond the pure satisfaction of consumer or commercial interests.  However, commercial organisations are increasingly arguing that they too play a role in delivering public value.

What do we mean by public value?  How do we measure it?  And who creates it?

A panel representing leading organisations from the communications, media and arts sectors will set out their thoughts on their role in delivering public value.

Speakers:

David Wheeldon, Director of Policy and Public Affairs, BSkyB

Jonathan Simon, Consultant and Former Head of Public Value, Channel 4

Simon Milner, Group Director, Industry Policy, BT

Jane Burton, Head of Content and Creative Director, Tate Media

Chaired by Damian Tambini, Senior Lecturer Media and Communications, LSE
