DATA PROTECTION AND PRIVACY:
NEW HORIZONS, NEW CHALLENGES

23 March 2010

Hosted by Squire, Sanders & Dempsey

Tower 42, 25th Floor
25 Old Broad Street
London EC2N 1HQ

There is barely a week that passes without a new headline on privacy, and barely a (tax!) year that passes without large volumes of personal data being lost in the post, on government laptops left on trains or in myriad other ways.  The Internet's amazing propensity to enable self expression, disseminate information and generate previously unimaginable modes of commerce has created immense opportunities, but also fears about the protection of personal information and questions about what ‘privacy’ really means in the Web 2.0 age. Last year’s review of the e-Privacy directive in Brussels generated a huge level of discussion, from the desire to improve controls on the dissemination of ‘cookies’ to the question of data breach notifications. The last day of 2009 also coincided with the deadline for an EU consultation on a review of the overall Data Protection Directive.

2010 therefore promises to be an important, if not crucial, year for a range of privacy-related issues.  We should expect more debate around data protection and data retention issues in Brussels and elsewhere, including across the Atlantic.  New questions are emerging around the move to “cloud computing” and storage, the continued development of online advertising and personal localisation tools, and transposition of the revised e-Privacy directive into UK law.

Our speakers, including UK Information Commissioner Christopher Graham, Facebook’s Richard Allan, the Open Rights Group’s Jim Killock and Google’s Peter Fleischer, will review and discuss the ICO’s work ahead, how the e-Privacy directive will be taken forward in the UK, implications of  the reopening of the EU Data Protection directive, and the opportunities and challenges presented by personal data flows in the Information Age.

Hear:

Christopher Graham, Information Commissioner, UK ICO

Richard Allan, Head of Policy EMEA, Facebook

Peter Fleischer, Global Privacy Counsel, Google

Jim Killock, Executive Director, Open Rights Group

Moderated by Ann LaFrance, Global Co-Leader, IT and New Media Law, Squire Sanders Dempsey
