Second Edition of the Antonio Preto Prize for the Development of Communications Culture
On 8th November 2018 in Naples, the IIC Italian Chapter and the Agcom, the Italian Communications Authority, jointly organized a major event for the Second Edition of the Preto Prize for the Development of Communications Culture. The Prize was created after Antonio Preto (Agcom Commissioner) passed away prematurely about two years ago, established by the Authority for Communications (Agcom) and the Italian Chapter of the International Institute of Communications.
The Preto Prize, which includes in the series of initiatives organized for Agcom's 20-year anniversary, is aimed at two categoriess: "Personality" based on those who have distinguished themselves for their contribution to the development of communications culture, and "Young scholar " selected on the basis of their scientific work and curriculum profiles.
The meeting, hosted by the Università degli Studi di Napoli “Parthenope, brought together about 90 senior representatives from policy makers and industry in the TMT sector.
After the welcome addresses from the University Chancellor, Alberto Carotenuto, Angelo Marcello Cardani (Agcom President), Fabio Colasanti (IIC Past President) and Gentian Sala (Chairman of the Audiovisual Media Authority in Albania), the conference started with an intervention about "Italy in digital Europe: what unifies and what divides" held by Fabrizia Benini, Head of Digital Economy and Skills Unit at DG Connect
The First Round Table "The development of New Generation Access networks and services, supply and demand dynamics" was introduced by Antonio Nicita (Agcom Commissioner) and Tommaso Valletti, DG Comp Chief Economist made a keynote speech. Leaders from the telcos, TIM, WindTre and Vodafone, as well as Open Fibre and Google, echoed their words for the regulation to be nimble and flexible to incentivise innovation.
Augusto Preta (IIC Italian Chapter President) coordinated the Second Round Table, on "Content, Digital Literacy, Pluralism and Social Inclusion". Vincenzo Zeno-Zencovich, a prominent jurist and lawyer, made the keynote speech and first class speakers like Marcello Foa, President of Rai, as well as Mediaset and Discovery senior representatives contributed to a top level debate.
Mario Morcellini (Agcom Commissioner) introduced the ceremony of the Preto Prize, while Enzo Cheli (President of the Antonio Preto Prize Jury) and Angelo Marcello Cardani (Agcom President) awarded the winners. The "Personality" prize was awarded to Tommaso Valletti and Vincenzo Zeno-Zencovich. For the "Young scholars" category, the winners were Andrea Giulia Monteleone (Law), Suania Acampa (Communications) and Maria Pia Di Nonno (Economics).
It was a lively and thought-provoking event, hosted by the lovely city of Naples, with the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Naples "Parthenope" Anna Papa who closed the event with a final speech.
