IIC Hong Kong Chapter & CASBAA Roundtable

mayor brown Jsm, central Hong Kong

9 november 2017

About the Roundtable

From the controversy over the Russia-funded election ads on Facebook… to ads for major consumer brands appearing next to ISIS recruitment videos… not to mention teenagers that turn not to Netflix but putlocker because well, it was the first search result… the Internet is in a period now where examining its regulatory underpinnings is an increasingly accepted practice for thoughtful nations.

Enter the European Commission which last month published guidelines for online platforms that take an important step in providing a new framework to stem the tide of illegal content online.

This roundtable discussion was be led by Gidon Freeman, Vice President of Government and Regulatory Affairs for NBCUniversal International who is based in London but was passing through Hong Kong after attending the CASBAA annual convention in Macau.

Gidon was joined in leading the discussion by Joe Welch who heads Public Affairs for Asia for 21st Century Fox.

Gidon provided the background on why and how policymakers have moved their thinking substantially on these issues in the UK and Europe in the last year in particular. Joe provided the Asia Pacific regional comparative.

This was a free event. Discussion took place under Chatham House.
