Julie Brill

Julie Brill is a partner and co-lead of the global privacy and cybersecurity practice of Hogan Lovells From April 2010 through March 2016, she was a Commissioner of the Federal Trade Commission.

Commissioner Brill has been widely recognised as one of the leading thinkers on global privacy issues. She was named “the Commission’s most important voice on Internet privacy and data security issues” a “key player in US and global regulations ”, “one of the top minds in online privacy”, one of the top four US government players “leading the data privacy debate”, “one of the top 50 influencers on big data”, a “game-changer”.

Prior to her confirmation by the US Senate to serve on the Federal Trade Commission, Commissioner Brill served as Chief Deputy Attorney General for Consumer Protection and Antitrust for the State of North Carolina and as Assistant Attorney General for Consumer Protection and Antitrust for the State of Vermont. She also was a Lecturer-in-Law at Columbia University’s School of Law.

Commissioner Brill graduated, magna cum laude, from Princeton University, and from New York University School of Law, where she had a Root-Tilden Scholarship for her commitment to public service. She has received numerous national awards for her work. In 2014 she received the Privacy Leader of the Year Award from the International Association of Privacy Professionals and the New York University School of Law Alumna of the Year Award. She also was recently elected to the American Law Institute.
