Sonia Gill

Sonia Gill is a broadcast journalist, media regulator, development practitioner and attorney at law.  She is also the first woman to be appointed Secretary General of the Caribbean Broadcasting Union (CBU) in its 47 year history.  

Ms Gill began her career in broadcast news and production at the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) in Barbados, where she won the Barbados Association of Journalists (BAJ) Radio Journalist of the Year award.
Ms Gill held the post of Assistant Executive Director, and Executive Director (Ag.) of the Broadcasting Commission of Jamaica for over a decade and spent more than five years as Assistant Resident Representative and Governance Advisor of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) office based in Jamaica, prior to taking up duties in January 2014 with the CBU at its headquarters in Barbados.

Ms Gill attained an honours degree in law at the University of London and qualified to practice at the Norman Manley Law School.  In 2005, she was called to the Bar in Jamaica and in 2014 was enrolled to practice in Barbados. She joined the BCJ after completing a first-class honours degree and then pursuing post-graduate studies at the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC) at the University of the West Indies (UWI). She has achieved the designation Paul Harris Fellow.
