Belgium’s ethics committee issues few sanctions

Belgium’s ethics committee for the telecoms sector, which regulates the use of premium numbers and paid SMS services, has issued just five sanctions from a total of 1,109 complaints received in the past five years, notes Telecompaper. The figures were disclosed by telecoms minister Alexander de Croo following questions from the MP Roel Deseyn. Deseyn told the paper De Zondag that there were no sanctions issued in all of 2017. While consumers may know how to file complaints, this does not appear to have any consequences in the form of fines. In October, the government approved a decree making the telecoms regulator BIPT responsible for enforcing rules on paid numbers and premium services. The regulator and consumers are expected to then have more tools to report and sanction fraudulent services. Read more
