ERGA speaks out on regulator independence

The European Regulators Group for Audiovisual Media Services (ERGA) has released a number of statements and reports, including a statement on the necessity of independent media, drafted in the light of the recent developments in Poland, as well a report on the independence of the national regulators. Poland introduced legislation in January this year that “raises serious concerns on the future independence of Polish public broadcasting organisations," says ERGA. It deprives the Polish national authority for audiovisual media of its power to nominate and dismiss the management of supervisory boards of the public service broadcasters and assigns this power directly to the treasury minister. In its statement ERGA welcomes the actions already taken by the European Commission and calls on it to continue to actively monitor developments and to take all necessary steps to support a free and independent media, including the taking of firm action against the weakening of the necessary institutional arrangements. ERGA’s report sets “clear minimum standards for all member states to ensure independence”. The statement is at http://bit.ly/1QVW7Gy and the report at http://bit.ly/1XtF5RR ERGA has also published the reports ‘The protection of minors in a converged environment’ and ‘Material jurisdiction in a converged environment’.
