MEPs Approve New European Commission
The EU Parliament voted to approve Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen’s new Commission by 461 votes to 157 against, with 89 abstentions yesterday, reports The Parliament Magazine.
The Commission’s first ever female Commission President, Ms Von der Leyen will take office with her team of Commissioners on 1 December. She has committed to making gender equality one of her priorities, and has committed to pushing over the coming years to achieve gender balance in the Commission across all policy areas. The current Commission comprises 11 female members and 15 male members.
President-elect Von der Leyen reiterated at a news briefing that investment and regulatory frameworks would be put into place for Europe to lead the way internationally on a range of what she called “critical issues,” including inclusion, innovation and digitalisation as well as the protection of democracy.
