Nigeria’s year of the telecoms consumer

Nigeria has declared 2017 as the “year of the telecoms consumer”, making the announcement recently on World Consumer Rights Day.  Said minister of communication, Adebayo Shittu: “The major issues of telecoms consumers include dropped calls, delays in hooking up calls due to congestion arising from possible obsolete equipment and maintenance, power interruption, network coverage issues and enforcement challenges. Our goal is to find balance between consumer rights and right to privacy,” he said. Umar Garba Danbatta, head of the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC), said the aim is to inform and educate the consumer with the intent of protecting and empowering them to make the right decision. To address unsolicited calls received by consumers, NCC has introduced the “do not disturb” (DND) facility, which consumers are urged to activate. In marking the year of the telecoms consumer, the commission also unveiled Nigerian comedian, Helen Paul, and movie actor, Ali Nuhu, as “faces” of the consumer.
