GSMA weighs in on Colombia’s regulatory regime

The GSMA has put forward a series of regulatory and public policy proposals to boost Colombia’s digital economy ahead of next month’s presidential elections, reports Telecompaper. “The industry body's recommendations presented at the Sixth Ministerial Conference on the Information Society in Latin America and the Caribbean include removing obsolete regulation and taxes, auctioning more spectrum, providing incentives for digital divide communities, SMEs and start-ups, and removing existing obstacles to rolling out infrastructure.” The GSMA last year lent its support to the creation of a unified regulator for the Colombian communications industry. A “super-regulator” would reduce administrative costs and procedures, boost competition and create a more stimulating for investment and innovation, said GSMA Latin America director Sebastian Cabello at the time. The project proposes merging the activities of existing communications regulator CRC and national television authority ANTV to create a single entity called the Communications Commission.
