Dutch privacy regulator gets more resources

The Dutch privacy regulator AP will receive more funds and staff to help with the implementation of the EU's new data protection rules, the justice ministry announced in parliament. Telecompaper reports that the additional budget will form part of the legislation for implementing the General Data Protection Regulation, which will give the regulator a number of new tasks. “An external consultant estimated that the changes for the regulator could increase its budget by 12-22 million euro, compared to the current 7.7 million euro per year. The ministry also said that AP for the moment appears able to keep up with data-breach notifications, since the implementation of stricter reporting requirements for businesses and other organisations from the start of 2016.” While the numbers grew to 2,317 in Q1 2017 from 5,693 in all of last year, the system was initially set up to handle around 66,000 notifications per year. In most cases businesses making notifications are able to quickly ensure compliance, requiring little help from the regulator. Read more
