UK conducts cybersecurity review

The UK government has announced the launch of a national cybersecurity review following the publication of a report by US intelligence agencies accusing Russia of a campaign to manipulate the recent US elections, reports Telecompaper. The UK enquiry will examine the different types of potential cyber threats, the development of offensive cyber capabilities and the human, financial and technical capital committed to counteracting threats. “Attention has recently focused on the potential exploitation of the cyber domain by other states and associated actors for political purposes,” said Margaret Beckett, chair of parliament's joint committee on national security strategy. “But this is just one source of threat that the government must address," she added. The review is part of the National Cyber Security Strategy launched by the UK government in November last year. The £1.9 billion funding for the 2016-21 strategy compares to a budget of £860 million over the previous five-year period. Security breaches affected 65% of large UK businesses in 2015, with TalkTalk receiving a fine of £400,000 for failing to prevent the cyber-attack on its systems in October 2015. Read more
