Though AI can generate economic growth, and help solve the world’s biggest challenges, the new Commission accepts it also needs to deal with the ‘risks’ the new technology brings, writes The Parliament Magazine’s Rajnish Singh.
The Magazine says that the potential for Artificial Intelligence to radically change society is not only generating excitement but also raising concerns about its possible negative impact, especially in relation to privacy and data protection.
In her letter to Renew group leader Dacian Ciolos, the new Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen, wrote, “Digital technologies are transforming the world. I believe in the opportunities digitalisation creates as long as we set the right boundaries and conditions, including finding the right balance between innovation and privacy.”
Ms Von der Leyen added that “the next challenge for Europe’s economy is the free flow and wide use of data and development of trusted AI solutions.” She has pledged to put forward new legislation for a coordinated European approach on the human and ethical implications of AI within her first 100 days in office. The IIC and Artificial Intelligence
The use of Artificial Intelligence is one of the topics which is often discussed at IIC events. In 2020, the policies surrounding AI will be considered first in February, at the three-day Telecoms, Media & Regulatory Forum in Bangkok, Thailand, as well as at a Workshop which will take place in Jakarta, Indonesia. Our most recent event, the Telecommunications & Media Forum in Washington DC, had a session devoted to the topic. In ‘Keeping pace with the ubiquity of Artificial Intelligence – policy, regulation, ethics, trust’, expert speakers from the Office of Science and Technology Policy, The White House; the News Media Alliance; the Brookings Institution and Microsoft all examined aspects of the issue.
The IIC’s Director General, Andrea Millwood Hargrave, produced a report on AI for a 2018 Symposium on the topic, held in Thailand.
