Vive le tour!: Esports was already on the rise when the International Olympic Committee president said in January 2020 that the Olympic Games must connect with gamers worldwide to remain relevant, and before the COVID-19 pandemic prompted the migration of sporting events online, including the inaugural Virtual Tour de France in July 2020, which involved men and women cyclists on bikes indoors plugged into a virtual cycling system.
