Momentum increases in Latin American roaming

Bolivia's telecommunications regulation authority, ATT, and the ITU have issued a statement confirming that they will work together to promote the goal of ending international roaming charges between countries in the Andean community, reports Telecompaper. “In a meeting attended by ITU secretary-general Houlin Zhao, Bolivia’s minister of public works, services and housing, Milton Claros Hinojosa, deputy minister of telecommunications Marcos Vasquez Quiroga and ATT executive director Roque Roy Mendez, the institutions pledged to collaborate to remove extortionate international roaming fees between Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.” The move comes just after Chile and Argentina announced the elimination of international roaming charges between the two countries by 2020, while America Movil last year said it planned to scrap roaming fees for subscribers to its Claro brand throughout the Pacific Alliance trading bloc of Peru, Chile, Colombia and Mexico.
