Juan Gerardo Flores Ramírez is an economist from Mexico’s Autonomous Institute of Technology (“ITAM”). A federal official for 12 years, mainly in Mexico’s telecommunications and broadcasting regulator, COFETEL, he was elected in 2009 to Mexico’s Lower House, where he served as Federal Congressman from September 2009 to August 2012 (Green Party). During this period he chaired the Radio, Television and Film Committee and acted as Secretary of both the Telecommunications and Energy Committees.
Since September 2012, Senator Flores is a member of Mexico’s Senate, where he acts as Secretary of the Communications and Transports Committee, and sits in the Foreign Relations, Broadcasting and Education Committees. He was heavily involved in the discussions for the new legal framework in Mexico for the telecommunications and broadcasting sectors.
He writes a weekly column in El Economista, an specialized newspaper in Mexico City, and obtained a diploma in telecommunications from Mexico’s Autonomous Institute of Technology (“ITAM”). He holds an MSc in Economics from the University of Warwick, United Kingdom, where he specialized in the areas of industrial organization and regulatory economics.
