Responsible AI is a Strategic Imperative for Africa By Mary-Jean Nleya

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing industries and economies worldwide, offering unparalleled opportunities for growth, operational efficiency and problem-solving across sectors like healthcare, finance, education, entertainment and logistics. With promises of enhanced productivity, cost efficiency and the potential to address complex societal challenges, AI is quickly shifting paradigms and becoming transformative. However, as the adoption of AI accelerates, the imperative to develop and deploy AI technologies ethically becomes clearer. And for Africa, ethical principles must influence and guide its AI governance because promoting the ethical development of AI is not only the right thing to do; it is a strategic imperative.

White Paper on the Data Protection Regimes in the GCC

This paper examines the existing data protection laws, regulations, and initiatives adopted by GCC countries (together, the "Data Protection Laws") with the focus on assessing the opportunity to develop a regional data protection framework, similar to the EU-wide General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”), that would allow for consistency in Data Protection Laws and their interpretation, the role of data protection and other regulatory authorities, and a harmonized implementation and enforcement across the GCC.

This briefing seeks to unpack some of the issues and is the first stage in a series of meetings across 2019 to enable policy makers to consider how best they can empower their communities to take advantage of the best of AI, while taking steps to safeguard against potential negatives. As with all IIC output the aim is to offer a forum for the exchange of ideas and information; we welcome your views, comments and, crucially, your involvement.
