The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) is responsible for regulating the country’s broadcasters and telecommunications carriers. The CRTC also issues licenses for broadcasters, and for telecommunications service providers whose networks allow calls to be made and received outside of Canada. Other roles include that of making ownership decisions on mergers, aquisitions and sales in the broadcasting sector, and approving tariffs for the telecoms sector.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic’s effects took hold, the CRTC has:

  • Praised and highlighted the efforts of broadcasters and telecommunications service providers who have provided health information to consumers, ensured network resilience and more.
  • Extended deadlines and postponed hearings where possible, to enable industry to focus on continuing to deliver a quality service to consumers at this time.
  • Provided answers in its Support Hub for consumers and business customers whose service has been affected by the pandemic.
