Restrictions designed to reduce spread of disinformation
MIT Technology review says that WhatsApp is introducing new limits on message forwarding in order to restrict the spread of disinformation during the COVID-19 pandemic. Messages identified as ‘highly forwarded’ can be passed on to only one recipient. The idea is to slow the spread of viral information, giving ‘truth a chance to catch up with falsehoods’. The journal points out that forwards are down by 25% since the company introduced a restriction to five forwarded messages last year. Read more
