The Internet Society, current owners of .org, had planned to sell the suffix to Ethos Capital, but the move was criticised by many organisations who argued that costs would rise and freedom of expression would be put at risk. ICANN chairman, Maarten Botterman noted that the ‘public interest nature’ of the organisation would have been transferred ‘in one bound to serve the interests of its corporate stakeholders’ had the sale gone through. Ethos Capital said that the decision would ‘suffocate innovation and deter future investment in the domain industry’. Read more.
