New agency to be tasked with ‘digital transformation’
The digitalisation of Japan’s outdated government administration is a top priority for new Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, reports Reuters. In Japan less than 12% of administrative work is transacted online, according to the Japan Research Institute. The new administration will launch a digital agency to overcome Japan’s vertically structured bureaucracy and accelerate a full digital transformation. The agency is expected to be in place by autumn 2021. Prime Minister Suga promised the overhaul in response to digital problems causing delays to cash payments during the coronavirus pandemic.
