EU to create wider powers to curb dominant platforms

Digital Services Act will establish ‘hit list’ of tech giants

Large technology platforms will be subjected to tougher regulation than smaller competitors under new EU regulations, reports the Financial Times. A ‘hit list’ of companies based on criteria such as market share and user numbers will feature up to twenty platforms, who will then be governed by rules requiring them to share data and explain how information is gathered. The list is likely to be dominated by US companies, which will cause friction with Washington, the paper says. However, political momentum for action is growing, and a congressional report in the US has also suggested a series of potential changes to the structures of large technology companies.
