Vestager outlines risks of ‘patchwork of national regulation’
Large platform risk facing ‘a completely fragmented European legal system’ unless they support the EU’s approach to regulation, reports the Financial Times. EU Commissioner Margrethe Vestager acknowledged that EU regulation was ‘strict’ and involved ‘a lot of obligations and restrictions’ but added that ‘at least it has pan-European scale’. A number of countries are passing national laws, which tech firms see as undermining the EU’s efforts to create a single set of rules. Vestager said that until recently, the EU had ‘been impressed’ by the innovations large technology companies had brought to the economy, but recent problems, including antitrust cases, had been a ‘wake-up call’.
