Solar power trials for mobile sites show interim success

Technology could support infrastructure in remote regions

Results from a trial in Germany have indicated that on-site solar modules can provide up to two-thirds of the peak power required to operate a mobile tower, reports totaltelecom. The trial, conducted by Deutsche Telekom and Ericsson, also showed that, in favourable weather conditions, the system can provide all of the non-peak power required for the sites to operate independently. A source said that ‘autonomous power supplies for mobile sites not only reduces CO2 emissions, but can also enable network expansion in areas where development costs were not previously economical’.
