Matt joined the FT in September 2024. He was previously responsible for running and reshaping the Guardian Live events team, internal, external communications, and global public policy issues for the Guardian. Matt also co-chairs the Guardian’s internal AI working group that has developed the principles on which genAI would be considered for deployment within the business. Matt also led on the establishment of an industry-led working group working with the UK government which considers the impact of AI technologies on the news ecosystem, including user experiences when encountering AI-generated news and information online. Matt was previously a member of the advisory panel to the UK government commissioned Cairncross review, which looked into the question of press sustainability, and has provided evidence to a wide range of committees of various Parliaments. Matt previously spent five years establishing a public policy function at Virgin Media, prior to which he worked in Parliament for a number of Labour MPs.
