Facebook has taken a number of steps related to COVID-19. To ensure that users have access to accurate information it has:
To combat the spread of disinformation and harmful content, Facebook has banned ads for a range of products such as face masks and hand sanitiser. The platform has also banned exploitative ads which use the virus to cause panic or suggest a cure.
As content reviewers have been sent home for their safety, Facebook has assigned human moderators to review content relating to issues such as child safety and terrorism. Automated systems are now reviewing a broader range of content, and the company has warned of a potential increase to false positives during this time.
On 17 March, a joint statement was issued by Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, Microsoft, Reddit, Twitter and YouTube in which they pledged to elevate authoritative content across all their platforms and jointly combat fraud and misinformation about the coronavirus.
