Ligado, previously known as LightSquared, has had its plans to introduce a 5G terrestrial network in the L-band approved by the FCC, reports Ars Technica. The spectrum is adjacent to the bands used by the Global Positioning System (GPS), resulting in objections being raised by the Department of Defense. However the FCC Chairman, Ajit Pai, insisted that the introduction of a base station power reduction, along with the use of a guard (separating) band, would ensure there was no interference. The website quotes the FCC as saying that the service ‘will promote more efficient and effective use of our nation’s spectrum resources’ whilst protecting adjacent band operations.
