FCC’s Ajit Pai announces departure

Role was ‘honor of a lifetime’

Ars Technica reports on the announcement by FCC Chairman, Ajit Pai, that he will step down on January 20th, 2021. Pai’s tenure saw deregulation of the broadband industry in the US, and the elimination of net neutrality rules, in the process overturning some of the biggest decisions made by his predecessor. In a statement, Pai said that ‘this FCC has not shied away from making tough choices. As a result, our nation’s communications networks are now faster, stronger, and more widely deployed than ever before’. However, he was seen by some as promoting the interests of large corporations ‘at the expense of smaller competitors and consumers’, said the news site. Pai described his appointment as the first Asian-American to chair the FCC as a ‘particular privilege’. He has made no announcement of any future plans.
