Digital Bytes: MeitY and India Telcom providers take measures to address surge in data traffic

  • MeitY’s digital kiosks (Common Service Centres) provide Wi-Fi hotspots which serve as the only way many rural Indians get to access key services (like G2P e-payments and telemedicine), and were initially shut because of the lockdown, but MeitY had since requested that the govt allow them to continue providing the service. Wi-Fi traffic in rural areas have surged by 100% since the lockdown in March.
  • COAI had initially called on DoT to urgently release additional spectrum on a temporary basis after data traffic spiked by 15-20% following the announcement of the nationwide lockdown.
  • COAI expects Q1 revenues to take a major hit due to weak subscriber growth and interrupted 4G expansion plans.
  • Meanwhile, OTT video providers, such as Amazon, Zee, TikTok, Netflix, as well as Google and Facebook have agreed to adopt measures to reduce bit rates on cellular networks.
