Revised consumer protection rules approved by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) will impact Telcos, requiring them to explain terms and conditions clearly and to assess a customer’s capacity to pay.
“The new TCP Code puts the onus on telcos to ensure customers understand what they are buying,” said ACMA Chair Nerida O’Loughlin.
Industry group Communications Alliance, with input from the Australian government, consumers and industry, led the development of the new Code governing sales practices, financial hardship and credit assessment.
The ACMA will monitor and investigate non-compliance with the regulations. Telcos will face substantial penalties of up to $250,000 for failure to comply with ACMA directions.
