ICASA, South Africa’s communications regulator, has come forward with plans for its long-awaited spectrum auction, reports Techcentral. Chairman Keabetswe Modimoeng explained that, after delays caused by Covid-19 and a lengthy stakeholder consultation, the licensing process for high-demand spectrum (crucial for 5G) and the wireless open access network (Woan) will proceed this week. The authority will make available 406 MHz of spectrum, in 34 lots. The regulator acknowledges previous problems caused by high reserve prices, and claims that the lessons learnt are reflected in the ‘reasonable’ reserve prices that have been set.
