“QR codes: Quick Response codes have been deployed widely during the COVID-19 pandemic, including for
contact tracing, contactless services and vaccination certification for international travel. Launched in
1994 by Japanese company Denso Wave, the two-dimensional QR code technology was originally intended
for manufacturing operations but continues to be developed. QR code co-inventors Masahiro Hara (right)
and Takayuki Nagaya (left) were awarded the European Inventor Award 2014 Popular Prize and received
the IEEE Milestone award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in 2020.
