Head of Regulatory and Government Affairs, SBS (Special Broadcasting Services)

Michael Coonan is a media and communications policy and regulatory leader with experience in both government and industry roles.

Mr Coonan joined SBS (Special Broadcasting Services), the Australian multilingual and multicultural public broadcaster, as Head of Regulatory and Government Affairs in 2017. Prior to SBS, Mr Coonanworked in public policy at Australian subscription television provider, Foxtel, for five years. In these roles, Mr Coonan has worked on a broad range of policy and regulatory issues, including audio description, classification, closed captioning, codes of practice, copyright, local content regulation, privacy, prominence, set top box energy efficiency, spectrum and technical regulations. Prior to Foxtel Mr Coonan spent eight years at the regulator, the Australian Communications and Media Authority, in both broadcasting and telecommunications regulatory areas.
