Raúl Solares’ experience in the telecommunications sector began in the mid-´80s when he entered to work for the state monopoly operator of his country and then in the elaboration of the Telecommunications Act initiative that liberalised this sector in Guatemala and later to watch over the formation, structure and start-up of the Superintendence of Telecommunications (SIT) as a regulatory body and to be part of the Board of Directors of the Fund for the Development of Telephony – FONDETEL – in its early years. Later he worked with the mobile operators Bell South and Telefónica Central America, to then work as a consultant at national and international level. Finally he returned to SIT where he is currently the Superintendent of Telecommunications.
In addition, Mr Solares is Guatemala’s representative of the Government Advisory Group (GAC) at ICANN and is responsible to the third Open Government Plan of Guatemala (2016-2018) for the fulfillment of the “Nación Digital” commitment that seeks to create a National Plan of Broadband Connectivity and a Digital Agenda. Member of the Board of COMTELCA and representative for Guatemala before REGULATEL, ITU and CITEL.
