Thabo Makenete is the Head of Public Policy, Southern Africa Region at Meta, managing key policy areas across the SADC region. Mr Makenete’s experience in the tech sector spans a period of over 25 years, in areas of telecommunications, broadcasting and online platforms. He has led regulatory and policy initiatives in both the private and public sectors. Mr Makenete’s expertise are widely recognized, having served as the Chairperson of the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), served in the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa’s (ICASA) Joint Spectrum Advisory Group and various South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) Technical Committees. Additionally, he was involved in the Digital Migration Advisory Council in South Africa and led a team that successfully negotiated positions at the WRC-19 and WRC-23.
Mr Makenete’s educational background is in Electrical/Electronics Engineering, with a specialization in Digital and Communication Systems, Information and Communications Technology Management and Business Management; which have equipped him with a unique blend of technical, engineering and management skills. This knowledge complements his expertise in the policy realm, allowing him to approach complex issues with a well-rounded perspective.
