In a blog post from Director of Chrome Engineering, Justin Schuh, Google has confirmed that it proposes to phase out support for third party cookies.
‘After initial dialogue with the web community, we are confident that with continued iteration and feedback, privacy-preserving and open-standard mechanisms like the Privacy Sandbox can sustain a healthy, ad-supported web in a way that will render third-party cookies obsolete’, writes Schuh, going on to say, ‘users are demanding greater privacy – including transparency, choice and control over how their data is used – and it’s clear the web ecosystem needs to evolve to meet these increasing demands’.
Some argue that the change could result in Google’s ad business becoming even stronger, reports the Wall Street Journal, as it will be able to use data from its own search while restricting access to others.
